Choosing the Right Tools: Tablets for On-Site Work (Part 1)

A few weeks ago, we discussed the advantages of tablets for specialty contractors.  With their superior battery life and portability, tablets can be a valuable asset to people who frequently work onsite.

The best part is the fact that they can integrate right into your field service software, allowing you to access and update vital information on the go.

However, even once you’ve decided you’re going to get a tablet, there are a lot quite a few options to filter through when finding the one that best fits you.  Below is a breakdown of some of the most popular tablets and why they might be a good fit for you.

Since the SAM Pro Enterprise (and the Sage 300 CRE) mobile application runs on Android, all of these tablets are Android base (sorry iPad users).

Great Tablet Choices

Google Nexus 7

Since Google is the mastermind behind the Android platform, it would make sense that they would produce one of the best, most popular tablets (though it’s technically built by ASUS).  In 2012, the Google Nexus 7 sold approximately 4.5 million units.

Why Should I Get It?

The Nexus 7 is great for a few reasons.  For starters, you can get one for $200.  That’s about as cheap as a full featured, functional tablet is going to get.

Despite the low price, it’s build is sturdy, and it’s design is attractive.  It also has enough power underneath to run your software with no hick-ups.  Another reason you might want to choose the Nexus is its size.  The tablet is 7.8 by 4.5 in., making it a perfect size to hold in one hand while you go about your work.

Otherwise Consider…

There is also the Nexus 10.  Similar in design, the Nexus 10 has a screen that’s three inches bigger and a processor that’s significantly faster.  If you want more power and a bigger screen, the Nexus 10 is also a great choice.  However, it will also cost you about twice as much.

ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity

The ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity is one of the nicest Android tablets available.  With a beautifully display screen, attractive design, and the ability to connect to a specialized keyboard dock, the Infinity is able to straddle the line between laptop and tablet.

Why Should I Get It?

ASUS has been a bit of a rising star in the computer world lately, and the Transformer tablet line has contributed significantly to that success.  The Transformer Pad Infinity is the newest model in the product line, and it’s the best.

Sporting one of the clearest, most beautiful screens you will find on any tablet, the Infinity is a thing of beauty to look at.  Underneath its chasse lies an incredibly fast quad core processor that will certainly speed up your work time.

It also has a respectable camera, so if you ever need to take a picture on-site, this might be a good choice.

A Big Selling Point

The reason the Transformer line is called “transformer” is because it can actually transform into a laptop.  ASUS makes a specially designed keyboard dock that the tablet plugs right into, giving you the full computer experience.

When the Tranformer Pad is plugged into the keyboard dock, you would never know it’s a tablet at all.  This gives users a great “best of both worlds” experience if you’re not sure a tablet is enough for you work.
